Project Title: Learn English @your library

Project Description: The Highland Branch Library wants to continue its successful ESL Class, formerly in collaboration with Literacy Volunteer of Rochester, now facilitated by educators from the community who are volunteering their time.

We also plan to build a collection to support this population in its Literacy, and Citizenship goals. The library is one property away from a 112 unit apartment complex, which houses a large refugee population. Most come from the Ukraine, Somalia, Sudan, and Ethiopia. The apartment complex and surrounding neighborhood is home to other immigrant families, including many Latinos.

Notable accomplishment, promising practices, or human interest stories: Commitment ,Commitment Commitment. Because of the obstacles this Library and the Highland Branch has faced,
The demonstrated commitment by the Library, volunteers and participants has been remarkable.

Key lessons learned: Make your plans, but be flexible. The Highland Branch has gone through a budget crisis, staffing crisis, and a departure from the Literacy Volunteers on this project. However the staff is committed to providing this ESL support and continues to be innovative in delivering these services.

Advice for other libraries serving adult English language learners: Again, be flexible, be patient.Be resourceful. Remember that learning English is a priority for this population, but so are family, financial, community concerns, that may affect program attendance at times.  Stay committed to providing these services.
